yeah, just during the update, they blast off for about 10 seconds, it actually sounds like a small airplane taking off (thankfully my mac pro is secured between my desk and the wall :) )

but NO, the fans are not loud all the time now, they sound just fine, but after the update (according to temperature monitor) they are about 10 degrees F cooler now at idle
That is normal during the installation and prior to the reboot.

I noticed today that someone is already in line at the Knox Henderson store. They had a tent setup.

Probably the same guy that was on the news before the iPhone 4 launch.

LOL nice one there :P however the army might be able to overlook water damage in dry areas like Afghanistan

Dust is an equally big problem. MBPs are just-about up to the task of day-to-day office use (we have 4-5 MBP at work) - logic board fail if they smell water near the keyboard. All HW ports are open. Al Cases prone to warpage...

But for all we know it's a tour to look at UI concepts for 'soldier of the future' type applications.

No. A car that gets 50mpg is likely much lighter than a car that gets 8mpgs... and hence doesn't put near as much wear on the road

Consider, if all cars were the size of a Smart ForTwo, or the awaited ForFour, a two lane road could become 3 lanes. ;)

Trucks and Hummers would just drive down the middle. :D

    Lion Server

    Simply a better server.
Lion Server is now part of Mac OS X Lion. Its easy to set up your Mac as a server and take advantage of the many services Lion Server has to offer. Here are just a few of the new features that make server deployment faster, easier, and more powerful than ever.

That doesn't say anything about the preview.

What you forget is that many Apple users will turn on Apple without proof at the slightest hint of anything to object to, however trivial :)

So much for being mindless Apple-praising "sheep" and "zealots" :D

You're pretty close to nailing it there - in truth, they're still sheep and zealots, terms that imply a lack of ability to think for oneself and an over-the-top reaction when someone else makes up, or changes, their mind for them. It's the same morons, they just rush to extremes no matter what.

As for the pod thing - true, Apple doesn't own the word "pod", but it's perfectly reasonable to protect your iPod trademark so that someone else doesn't start making mp3 players called a MePod or something. I can't see how anyone can fault Apple for that. Trademark is not at all like copyright - if you don't actively protect your TM through the legal process, someone later CAN theoretically market their MePod and claim in court that since Apple didn't protect their trademark in a similar case, they can call their player a MePod, and perhaps even trademark THAT.

It's a jacked-up system, but you gotta play by the rules, I guess, if you want your product name protected.

50 billion out of a budget of what? A trillion and a bit?

I could remove 25% of your body weight and make you slim and sexy.

On the other hand, I could remove less than 2% of your body weight and render you a useless, comatose, vegetable.

It's not a matter of how much is cut as it is what is cut.

No one is going to write an iPhone 5 (fifth gen hardware) app? You're just like the people who thought "No one is going to write retina display apps, most people have the old phones." Now if you don't support the retina display, your app is very much inferior.

There will MOST DEFINITELY be a good amount of fifth gen only apps, and even more 4th+5th generation only apps. Just like some of today's apps only support the 4 and 3GS.

There's a huge difference between SUPPORTING the a-5 (or retina display) and REQUIRING.

Look, I'm not against the A-5. Whatever. Knock yourselves out with it. I'm just saying that when push comes to shove, you're going to wish you had LTE compatability more than an A-5 processor.

All the processing speed in the world can't save you if your phone can't access content fast enough -- and with the move to cloud-based storage on the horizon, anyone carrying a 3G phone is going to have a miserable experience.

The only thing I stream to my iP4 or my iPad is Netflix on my lunch hour at work. Netflix streaming is satisfactory over 3G. I'm not going to complane if the wait another year to upgrade.

    effectively you HAVE argued wrong:

It does not matter what focal length it is, the SENSOR will create the image.. the only difference is that the EFs lens has a smaller image circle.. NOTHING ELSE changes!!! absolutely NOTHING. I don't get what your problem is.. the mm amount on the lens is what matters... if you only get a 1.6x crop out of the resulting image in comparison to a full 35mm frame has no relevance to the lens.

    end of story.

A canon 55-200 EF-s and a 70-200L lens at 200mm on a canon 7D will produce the exact same image...the same as if you would mount both lenses on a full frame body and crop the image by 1.6.

end of this meaningless discussion now.. geez

Well.. I ordered the 320m Air yesterday, after reading up on the latest rumors. Maybe I will regret this but since I plan to do some basic 3D (Maya) modelling and opengl graphics development on the go, I figured the sandy bridge upgrade will actually be more of a downgrade.
    We'll see.

I'll second that, no intel 3000 will be entering my house
And I doubt that there will be a backlit keyboard again. As I said in the last thread apple took it out for a reason not for fun

And that reason was? Thinness? Cost? Do you have any evidence to back this up?

I think it was simple economics - take out the BL keyboard to get the cost under $999 and keep the margins at 30%.

However, as tech gets more mature, and the R&D Cost is recouped for the new design, I think they can re-add the BL Keyboard w/o sacrificing the $999 Price-point or the 30% margins.

As you said, it wasn't just "for fun", but "for profit" and if they can maintain that profit, and return a marquee feature like the BL Keyboard, why not?

It was neat -- and somewhat comforting -- to know exactly what my pilot was doing up there.)United is the ONLY airline that does this.

sounds like the stuff under that key is all gunked up. clean it out and see what you can. tho i don't know how deep the damage is as far as the mobo goes. i would check that out and maybe use some rubbing alcohol and clean off the mobo and see what it does. TAKE ALL THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. idk how well my advice will work as i don't know how bad the damage is. perform these feats at your own risk.

The Laffer Curve makes sense. You find a balance and you have taxes that are low enough not to hinder the economy and high enough to fund the government. I really don't understand where this "keep lowering taxes" logic comes from. It certainly has nothing to do with the Laffer Curve.

The Laffer Curve is often referenced, but you're correct about it's actual meaning. Some conservatives have taken the Curve to mean that lowering taxes will always bring about more revenue. Something this article is trying to address.

I wasn't making that argument so I guess I was confused why it was brought up. I've only been making an argument that the article can't conclude cutting taxes resulted in the budget problem. A state may have cut taxes and their economy might not have improved since cutting taxes, but the author of the article needs to fill in the gap and explain why there is a correlation/causation.

Negative correlation is very difficult to prove, but the article was merely noting that lowering taxes does not make for a rising economy. Obviously, we'd look to see if raising taxes improved the economy, and we might try to use some statistical methods to identify correlation.

What's important is that many conservative politicians have been selling low taxes as a fix for state budgetary problemsWisconsin is a good examplewithout acknowledging that such measure often don't work, especially in the short-term.

I propose that you could run a state with some income tax or no income tax if the budget was made competently. So, IMO, cutting taxes does not, in and of itself, mean it has caused a budget shortfall. I personally think cutting taxes does help the economy but that's not what is at issue here.

In the short-term, lowering taxes just takes money from the state purse and does not drive new economic development. In the mid-term and long-term, lower taxes may encourage growth, but there's not a direct connection between taxation and economic development. They are orthogonal elements.

I have only a general understanding of the theories those guys you mentioned are famous for. I think Austrian economics make much more sense. A theory of how to get the maximum tax dollars out of the people is irrelevant to me. It's like studying how much blood you can drain from people while keeping them alive. My preferred income tax rate is 0.

For the Red Cross, knowing that fact is infinitely useful. For government, some tax is necessary to maintain infrastructure, pay for public safety, and encourage a social society. The complicated part is how to get some money without adversely affecting the entire society.

I don't mind paying taxes because I like good roads, working sewers, and schools. I also like national parks, museums and libraries. I don't mind paying for cops, firefighters, and department of environmental quality either. These are useful things that help me more than they cost to me personally and I would hesitate to argue that for nearly everyone this is true.

I wouldn't have believed it 3 years ago but now I can say from experience that anyone can do it if that's what they want to do. It's all a matter of hard work and willingness to live cheaply. The only thing that might tie you down is a family. I live for traveling so I've just worked my life to be able to do what I like. 3 years ago I was a law school dropout with no prospects and a monthly loan repayment of $1100. The highest paying job I qualified for was tutoring.

    We should talk.

I've traveled a lot and I'm hoping to do more once my son is a bit older.

A call from .........]AT&T, you're an embarrassment.[/B] Apple had better make sure this exclusivity ends next year. This is about as ridiculous as it can get.

This is old news I have been trying for over a month and a half to look at iPhone prices on AT&T's website and have had the same thing.
