It's so easy being green....

This week I decided it was time to talk about recycling. Redesign (and any smart interior design really) is all about using as much of what you already have before going to the store. It's about being creative, thinking outside the box and trying to save money. Recycling and redesign are similar concepts; we alter and adapt so that we can reuse items that we already have.

To me recycling is a bit like leftovers; I don't want to have the same roast beef dinner two days in a row, but if on the second day it is cubed and stir fried with fresh vegetables it will seem like an entirely new meal. Recycling in your home is the same way. Be innovative when you think about how it could be put to better use. Don't be predictable and just add any old fringe onto the bottom of a lampshade. Take the time to think about what you would really like eg. match the color of the trim to the lampshade, make it look very deliberate and not like you have mottled together a bunch of old junk on a Saturday afternoon. It's the details that make the difference.

With that in mind here are some easy recycling/redesign ideas for you to try:

    1. Paint it. If you hate it enough to throw it away then you have nothing to lose by painting it. If it's metal use a can of spray paint, if it has a wood finish sand it down a bit then paint away with whatever is hanging around the house. Remember gloss stands out more than matte. (I use black chalk board spray paint on anything metal - it works like a dream and has a black iron look to it when dry).

    2. Bring it inside. If it's an outdoor piece of furniture consider how it would look/function inside.

    3. Take it outside. Same idea - maybe it could be waterproofed or polyurethaned and put outside or even used in a covered porch area. If it fades or warps after a few years does it really matter??

    4. Replace the knobs on anything. Try to use the opposite texture/element of what you already have. If they are wooden try a metal knob, metal try glass, glass to wood etc......

    5. Take off the doors. Remove cabinet doors in the kitchen and you instantly have some open shelving to
display plates and glasses. If you don't like it just put them back on again.

    6. Use old chipped china dishes and cups to hold watches, jewelry, pencils, plant pots etc.

    7. Recover a pillow (or even a small chair if you're brave) with fabric, hot glue and safety pins.

    8. Revamp your sofa. Take the fabric skirt off the bottom to expose the legs. Replace the legs if they are dated (most just screw on underneath and a variety can be found in your local home improvement store). Adding taller legs can also update an old sofa that is too low.

    9. Remove the glued on appliques from your dresser or china cabinet. Take a flat head screwdriver or a knife and pry it under the applique. Tap with a hammer and usually the applique will pop off. If necessary patch afterwards with a bit of spackle and paint or stain over it.

    10. Paint the inside of any cabinet a contrasting color to the outside. Any type of paint will do, your cabinets will have more depth and the contents will look more cohesive.

Finally, don't be afraid to try anything. If you are considering throwing it away then why not take a little time to try and fall in love with it again? Source URL: http://lifestyleartsblogs.blogspot.com/2009/05/

Heaven

Fun Fact Friday - You can still have beautiful photos in rain

Fact: I shoot outside when the weather is wet.
Now, if there is a tornado warning or a monsoon downpour I will find another location that is both safe and beautiful...

Andy and I got married 8 years ago this very weekend - the weekend after Memorial Day. And it rained. Outdoor photos were extremely important to me and I had to beg, beg, beg my photographer to go to a park. Back then, my photographer was shooting with a medium format film camera that wasn't weather proof, and of course he didn't bring any rain gear. Not even an umbrella.

I sure am glad that I forced him to shoot outside during our rainy day. Those are the photos I love the most... especially the ones of Andy and I kissing under the umbrella.

This is why I am sooooo determined to shoot in any weather. It is as important to me that you have outdoor wedding photos as much as it was to me on my wedding day 8 years ago. In order to shoot in the rain I bring 8 black golf size umbrellas for you and your wedding party. I bring rain gear for myself and my cameras. If I know it is going to rain really hard I will scout the area for overhangs so you will stay dry while I shoot out into the openness.

Last weekend I shot an outdoor ceremony at the Paine Art Center in Oshkosh. Of course, minutes before the processional started heavy drizzle. The show went on. Luckily, guests brought umbrellas and the Michelle at the Paine distributed even more. The ceremony was beautiful despite the rain... and I was able to capture some great moments.

The great thing about a light drizzle is that there is no blinding sun and no harsh light that can create ugly shadows. Actually, I'd rather shoot on a dreary day over any other day! The colors from last weekend's wedding are so bright and vivid - an amazing contrast to the wet surroundings.

Full blog post coming soon on Jessica and Jerrod's May 23, 2009 wedding at the Paine Art Center and Gardens - Oshkosh, Wisconsin

Meet Nellie

Meet Nellie. My mom and dad's newest little puppy. She is a King Cavalier Spaniel. As Tyra Banks would say... she has a bit of "ugly" to offset her "cute".

They named her Patronella after my great-grandmother. So Nellie for short. Such a perfect name.

The chair is a Northwoods roadside find... as Andy and I were driving up north, about 10min away from the cottage I spotted this Ardent blue chair. The sign said free. It is just perfect!!! Expect to see some upcoming sessions with this chair.

Lisa & Dan at Wotton House

Lisa and Dan tied the knot in The Old Library at Wotton House in Dorking on a beautiful Spring day. Spending the entire day at the venue allowed the lovely couple to enjoy the grounds and weather to their fullest and along with a great guest list made for a really enjoyable photography experience.

With the different Chinese and English backgrounds there were elements of both cultures present throughout the wedding. A Chinese tea ceremony, origami, cake designs and seating charts brought the whole event together and a jazz band took the evening party honours.

Galison

A hiatus...

    Dear animation friends...

Sorry to say, I need to take a hiatus from posting here. This labor of love has been a source of great joy, but I literally don't have the time necessary to post on any kind of regular basis.

I am leaving all the artwork online as a reference source, and hopefully in the not-too-distant future I'll be able to start posting again.

Thanks for all your encouragement and support.

    Very sincerely,

Sunday's Wedding

    Photobucket

On Sunday I shot the wedding of Sonia and Bruce at the beautiful Barnsgate Manor in Sussex. An absolutely scorching day made the men happy to be wearing kilts as everyone chased the shade. An unusual May wedding event in England to be sure. The lovely Sonia and Bruce made full use of the beautiful grounds, views over the forest and weather to create an intimate and memorable wedding day. As usual their full wedding story will follow shortly but for now here's a picture of the special cake made for them by one of their friends.Source URL: http://lifestyleartsblogs.blogspot.com/2009/05/

TOTTALY WICKED!

Vianey & Roger :: Engagement

Vianey & Roger will be tying the knot here very soon. We had their incredible engagement session at Santana Row in San Jose. I LOVE that place. Further, Vianey works in administration there at Santana Row and is one of the persons in charge of issuing permits to photographers who'd like to use the grounds for sessions. After looking through LOTS of photographer she chose me. YAY!! Quite the compliment Vianey.

I have lots in the cooker so if you had your wedding, engagemnt of post wedding session within the last couple months then expect to see it soon. Yay!! August is gonna rock guys. Looking forward to shooting the big day. Blessing everyone and Happy Memorial Day. Be sure to thank a Vetern.

    ~Sam
